Get to Know an Agent in Attendance: Maria Vicente of P.S. Literary

Maria Vicente is a Senior Literary Agent and Advisor at P.S. Literary representing bold and innovative books for kids, teens, and curious adults.

Her favourite books to work on allow readers to experience something new about the real world or invite them into fictional worlds they’ll never want to leave. In her 8 years at P.S. Literary, Maria has launched the careers of many authors and illustrators and is known for being an early advocate of the growing graphic novel market in trade publishing.

With a B.A. in English from Carleton University and a B.Ed. from Western University, Maria puts her teaching background to use hosting presentations and workshops about the book industry. She lives in New Brunswick, Canada, reading and selling books from the Atlantic Ocean shore.

Maria is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Literary Agents (PACLA).

Young Adult: “I am interested in a variety of YA genres: contemporary, magical realism, horror, mystery, thriller, and light fantasy—just to name a few! I enjoy literary prose combined with a strong voice and high concept. My YA wish list includes: contemporary stories about best friends; macabre fairy tale retelling; LGBTQ+ romantic comedy; a book about a boy band; eerie mysteries and thrillers; magical realism with gorgeous prose; a novel-in-verse; experimental story structures.”

Middle Grade: “I am currently looking at all genres of middle grade. I am also open to chapter books with strong series potential. My MG wish list includes: fantasy based on non-Western folklore; creepy horror stories; a modern Sweet Valley Twins series; an animal story (not talking animals; ex: Pax); high concept chapter book series; realistic stories with literary prose.”

Picture Books: “I am looking for illustrated picture books by author/illustrators. Topics on my picture book wish list include: stories with literary sensibilities (ex: Birdsong, Lubna and Pebble; Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox; This is Sadie; Virginia Wolf); nonfiction (not biographies); the Wheel of the Year; cultural traditions/folklore/history.”

Kidlit nonfiction: “I am looking for nonfiction projects for readers of all ages. I expect a nonfiction book proposal to offer a new perspective on an entertaining topic. I particularly enjoy nonfiction in the pop culture, science, design, and lifestyle categories. If you’re a millennial journalist hoping to turn your expertise on a topic into a book, please get in touch! Some specific nonfiction wish list topics include: the history of a pop culture topic; lifestyle for millennials; vegan cookbook; nonfiction for kids and teens; smart essay collections; illustrated gift books.”

Kidlit Graphic Novels: “I represent illustrated books for all age categories. If you are an illustrator, please provide a link to your portfolio when sending a query letter. My current comics wish list: graphic memoirs; graphic nonfiction; contemporary young adult.”
